Easy Come…..

by Jake Hershey on February 3, 2013

This morning started out like all the rest.  Before I pulled out of the driveway to head to church, I said my usual Sunday morning before church prayer, “Father, I ask that you’d speak to and through the pastor, myself and everyone else in attendance today and I pray that your presence would be felt.”

The pastor started a real good sermon about “taming the tongue”(go read James Chapter 3).  He started by talkin’ about the impact that words can and do have on a person’s life.    The preacher explained that the tongue can have negative effects….he used the example of a person he knew who had lost their job due to lies that were told about them.

Then the preacher explained that the tongue could have positive effects on a person’s life and relationships as well.  “For example”, he said, “If you’re dating a girl, you might tell her she’s pretty all the time.”

He went on to say, “As a matter of fact, that’s how I got my wife…I was always tellin’ her how pretty she was.”

And in the next sentence, my morning prayer was answered.

The preacher said, “But she was easy so it didn’t really matter.”

It was awesome.

The whole church held their breath for a split second.  Then somebody laughed.  Then another.  Then the whole church busted up with laughter.

The words that he used to describe his would be wife’s reaction to all of his compliments when they were dating weren’t the ones that he meant to use…or they at least could have been taken the wrong way.  We all knew what he meant, but that didn’t matter one bit.  I go to a cowboy church and when a preacher screws up that big he ain’t gonna get away with it.  Well over 200 people had a good laugh, including the preacher and his wife, who’s a great gal.

What the preacher failed to mention (probably because he was a little flustered) was that God had just proven his point.  What he didn’t know was that God had also just answered my prayer in the process.   God spoke TO him on what to preach about.  Then God spoke THROUGH him by proving exactly what the bible says-that we need to always be aware of what we say and how we say it.

Watch what you say and how you say it.  And don’t take what others say too seriously.

Answered prayer is awesome.  Thanks to Pastor Charky Marquis of Lone Star Cowboy Church in Corsicana, Texas for allowing God to use you…….and for a real good laugh.

“Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.  My brothers, this should not be.”  James 3:10
