How To Keep Your Fat Butt From Gettin’ Bucked Off A Bronc That Can’t Eat Right While You’re Ridin’ Straight To Hell

by Jake Hershey on February 23, 2013

I had to go out of town last week.  As a Licensed Equine Dental Practitioner (yes, there is such a thing) living in the state of Texas, I am required to get a certain amount of continuing education hours each year to keep my license.  Turns out, the only place to do that was at the International Association of Equine Dentistry (yes, there is such a thing) convention in Tempe, Arizona.  So the wife and I booked a couple of plane tickets and headed to Arizona.

For three days I was surrounded by horse dentists and vets from all over the United States as well as Germany, Switzerland and Australia.  FYI: guys from Germany wear some funny lookin’ britches.  They’ve got a really low waist and they’re really tight all the way down to the ankle.  Kind of like denim spandex.  Of course they got a big kick out of my “cowboy moustache” and my bible says “judge not lest you be judged” so I’ll change the subject.  But those were some really goofy lookin’ britches.

Besides comparing current trends in fashion and facial hair I also managed to pick up some good information about equine dentistry.  There are several different techniques, instruments and theories on several different subjects and it was good to listen and learn from different folks.  It’s really pretty amazing the amount of information some folks know about the things they’re passionate about.

But all the information in the world doesn’t do a fella any good if he doesn’t use it.  There were speakers at the conference who knew the anatomy of a horse’s mouth about as good as any person could, but they had never actually done dentistry.

I had a coach for a few years in college who understood the mechanics of bronc riding really well, but he wasn’t very good at applying them personally.

I happen to know for a fact that if I’d eat less and exercise more I’d lose weight…but I’m still fat.

As a Christian, it ain’t enough to just know the truth about Jesus Christ and what he did for you and me.  Ya gotta believe it….and then ya gotta put it into practice in your life.

I know that if I’d eat less and exercise more that I’d lose weight.  I don’t just know it, I also believe it!  But until I put what I know and believe into practice, I’ll still jiggle just a little bit when I walk.

Whether it’s horse dentistry, bronc ridin’, losin’ weight or ridin’ for Jesus…head knowledge can only get you so far.  You’ve got to put what you know and believe into practice.  You’ve got to do it.

I know I’ve got to.  Or else my fat butt will get bucked off of a bronc that can’t eat right while I’m ridin’ him straight to hell.

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”

Ecclesiastes 9:10
