Introducing My Friend – Barry Ward

by Kevin on December 28, 2010

“Hello?” I answered sleepily. My phone doesn’t usually ring after 10:00 pm. Little did I know that this phone call would bring me new friends and a journey that would span three states and a trip to the airport.

“Is this Pastor Kevin Weatherby?”

“Yes it is,” I answered.

“Kevin, my name is Victoria Ward and I’m in Dodge City, Kansas. I don’t know what to do or who to call. My daughter is broke down in Fort Stockton and she is trying to get to the airport to catch a flight at 5:20 in the morning. She has already tried to get later flights, but everything is booked solid. Her brother is flying in from Spain and we were going to have an early Christmas with the whole family. Is there anything you can do to help us?”

I was already sliding my feet into my boots. There are just times that, despite your weariness, you can feel God pushing you to do something. Mrs. Ward hadn’t even finished explaining everything she needed before I was up and getting dressed.

“Don’t you worry ma’am,” I told her. “I’ll get your little girl to the airport tonight and I’ll tell you who to call to get her truck fixed.”

“Thank you so much,” Mrs. Ward told me. “We are going to be here in Dodge City for the early Christmas and then head home on Sunday (December 17).”

I nearly didn’t catch the going home part as I was putting my hat on. “Oh yeah,” I said. “Where’s home for you?”

“Elbert, Colorado,” she said.

I asked her, “Is that near Elizabeth, Colorado?”

“Yeah! Our ranch is eleven miles south of Elizabeth. You know where Elizabeth is?”

“This is going to sound crazy,” I told her. “But I’m driving to Elizabeth on Sunday too!”

The Rescue

My wife and I drove to Fort Stockton and found Sierra. We got her stuff throwed in the back of the truck and then told her the tale of how we were going on a family vacation to stay in Elizabeth, Colorado with some friends.

We all laughed and marveled at how God introduces us to folks and brings new friends into our lives.

I finally got back to the ranch about 2:30 in the morning, but I wasn’t the least bit tired. I couldn’t wait to get to Colorado and meet Barry and Victoria Ward. Seems we had more in common than any of us would know. Let me back track to the first phone conversation and fill you in on why we were so excited.

The Rest of the Story

Mrs. Ward finished our phone conversation by telling me that we would HAVE to look them up and meet them when my family got to Colorado. They wanted us to come out to the ranch or meet and have lunch.

She then told me that her husband was an award winning Christian singer. He isn’t a country singer, he’s a western singer. Think of people like Michael Martin Murphy, Sons of the San Joaquin, Red Steagall, and Don Edwards.

Barry Ward

I could write a week’s worth of stuff about all the conversations we had and the way God blessed our time together.

Barry was a fourth-generation Kansas farmer and left his life long passion to work for God. He travels all over the United States and has even played his western music in Africa. He has played Carnegie Hall and has won numerous awards that he refused to even talk about.

I’ve never met a more humble man than Barry “Bear” Ward. His love of music and the Lord shines through him like the sun at high noon. I sat fascinated as he sang “Ridin’ Along the Cimarron”. Even my kids turned to watch him play and listen to him sing.

I’d like for you to watch this video and just picture all of us sitting around a ranch house living room with the fire going. With that in mind, here is the exact song he played for us. Hope you enjoy.

Barry will be performing at the Pecos County Cowboy Church on Sunday, January 16, 2011 when he comes down to visit his daughter. Please drop by and meet him or go to his website and get him to come to your church or cowboy gathering.

Contact him at: http://barrywardmusic.com/

Drop by and listen to him, book him, or just support him by purchasing one of his great CD’s. You’ll be blessed if you do.

  • Hey just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same results.
