Lie Still, Help Is Right There

by Kevin on January 10, 2012

I woke up that morning and showered. Little did I know that upon walkin’ out of the tiny RV I lived in on the ranch, my day would be totally ruined.

I went out to feed Roland and Cort, my two Catahoula cowdogs. They were waiting on me as usual for their morning breakfast, but there was no way they could eat. My heart jumped into my throat as I saw all the porcupine quills in their mouths.

It looked as though the two dogs didn’t just walk up and sniff the arrow-backed animal, they went in for the kill. Cort couldn’t even close his mouth and Roland’s tongue had been run right through and pinned to the side of his lower jaw.

They whined and I tried to help them, but in their pain they stayed away from me. I could get close, but they would move away. I even tried to rope them, but they were too quick.

This went on forever and I won’t draw out this story because of the pain it brings back. I know you probably feel the same way by now. Needless to say, the story doesn’t end well for either dog.

Every day I talk to folks who are hurting. They try to come to God for help, they know where to go, but they always stay just out of arms reach.

For example, they come to church, but they don’t give their lives to him. It doesn’t even have to be at church. They may be ridin’ along and hear Him callin’ out to them, but instead of going to the one that can save, they hold on to the very thing that is killing them.

I just wish those two dogs had been able to know that by coming to me and laying down at my feet, I could have saved them. But what I wish for even more than that is for those cowboys and cowgirls who are hurting (maybe that is you) could realize the same thing about God.

The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14

Great illustration. Thank you for sharing with us.

  • God wants us to just “be still and know that He is God”! Shouldn’t be that hard, but most of us are more like your dogs than we like to admit. Keep up the God work!

    Good Morning Kevin,

Wow – “Be Still And Know That I’m God” has really been on my heart for a while now and it’s very hard to do, but I know that’s exactly what I need to do and I have and will continue to try doing just that! Thanks for the message and the confirmation!

Blessings to you and yours always,

    Greg
