People Are Just People

by Jake Hershey on September 2, 2012

People are just people.  One of my cowboy heroes is the grandpa of my best friend.  When we were young, he taught us everything we knew about riding all 3 rough stock events in rodeo.  He was a champion in several amateur associations in his day and we thought his word was rodeo cowboy gospel.  I thought he could do no wrong.  The older we got, the more we realized that just because he’d taught it to us, it didn’t mean that was the only way to do things.  As I look back now, I realize that some of the principles he taught us did nothing more than create bad habits that had to be corrected as we moved up the ranks of rodeo and got on tougher stock.

I was a pastor for about two and a half years.  One of the things I struggled with was people putting me on a pedestal because I was a pastor.  I know and agree that Christian leaders are held to a higher standard of accountability.  But, let me tell you this….pastors ain’t perfect.  They’re just people.   I happen to know several pastors and believe me, they ain’t perfect.  But, they love God and are doin’ their best to do what God has called’em to do.  They’re called by God, but they’re also just people.  And thank God for’em.

I have only been taken advantage of twice in my adult life that I can remember.  Both times it was by self professed Christians.  Men who were dang good at talkin’ the talk but not so much at walkin’ the walk and by the time I figured out the latter, it was too late.  They’d already got to my wallet.  In both cases, the man I used to be would have showed up on their doorstep and taken it out of their hides.  But, there’s no sense in that.  They’re just people.  They’ll have to answer to God and that’s good enough for me.

You’ve probably heard it said that people are inherently good.  I’m not sure if that’s true or not.  The bible says that we’re all sinners and that not one of us is good.  It also says that when God created man, He did it in his own image, which is good.  Of course, man screwed all that up when that gal listened to the snake and ate the apple.  I’ll leave all this up to the theologians of the world, of which I’m not.  I think deep down we are all good…but that we are also born with a sinful nature and it’s up to us whether we give into it or do what Jesus would do.

I said all that to say this.  People are just people.  That’s it.  Nothing more and nothing less.  I’ve known some really good people who had a quick lapse in judgement and did the wrong thing.  I’ve known some not so good people who had a quick lapse in judgement and did the right thing.  Chances are, you know people like that too.  Chances are, you’ve put your faith in someone who let you down.  Maybe it really crushed you.  Don’t let it.  Here’s why.

In the whole bible, we’re only told to put our faith in one person.  His name is Jesus Christ.  He’s the only person that ever has or ever will walk the face of this earth and live a perfect life.  Of all the people I’ve put my faith in, He’s the only one that hasn’t let me down.  I don’t know you but I can guarantee He’s never let you down, either.  And He never will.  The same can’t be said for anyone else.  I don’t care how well you think you know someone or how good of a person you think they are…they ain’t perfect.  They’re gonna screw up.  And so are you.  And so am I.  There’s nothing wrong with trusting people.  If we never trusted each other this world would be more screwed up than it already is.  I thank God for the family and friends he’s given me that I know I can trust.  But, they’re just people.  When someone disappoints you whether it’s a pastor, friend, spouse, child, acquaintance, etc., know this.  They ain’t Jesus. They’re just people.   Know matter how bad the thing they did was, they’re gonna have to answer to God for everything they’ve done in this life.  Gettin’ mad won’t do you any good.

God doesn’t want us to be taken advantage of.  When people let you down, it’s up to you and God to decide if you want to give them another chance or not.  But God also doesn’t want us to hold grudges.  Jesus came so that we could have life and have it even better than we imagined.  Lettin’ some idiot ruin your day or your week or your life ain’t part of God’s plan for you.  People are just people.

Instead of puttin’ your faith in people, try putting it in Jesus Christ.  I guarantee He ain’t gonna disappoint ya.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8
