Speakin’ Chinese

by Jake Hershey on August 26, 2012

My cousin lives in Iowa, where I was raised.  He called awhile back and asked me if I’d be the preacher at his wedding.  I was honored that he asked me, but a little apprehensive.  My cousin is a super good guy…but he ain’t a cowboy.  And neither are any of his friends.  Or any of his friend’s friends.  Or any of his friend’s wives.  Or their friends.  Or any of their parents.  You get the idea.   I told him I’d be honored and happy to do it, but that I didn’t know how they’d take my “style”.  He wasn’t worried about it, so neither was I.

My wife and I flew up there and went to the rehearsal/dinner the night before.  My suspicions were proved correct.  Everyone in the wedding party and all the family were real nice…but didn’t know a billet from a latigo….or a snaffle from a spade….or a pastern from a hock.  You get the idea.

I realized that it would probably be necessary to change my standard “wedding message” so that the audience, as well as the bride and groom, wouldn’t think I was speaking some dialect of midevil mandarin Chinese that was lost centuries ago.  Everything went well and the only funny look I got was when talking about the struggles that every marriage endures….all I could think to say was, “The broncs of life are gonna buck.”  So that’s what I said.  It got a few funny looks, but I’m pretty sure everyone got the general idea.

In spending time with these good folks and in between answering questions like, “How many horses do you have?” about 57 times, something occurred to me.

No matter what you do for a living, or where you live, or what nationality you are, we all speak one universal language.  And that language is love.  My cousin and his friends know absolutely nothing about the “cowboy” stuff that makes me who I am.  I know absolutely nothing about the things they do that make them who they are.  But we all know this.  We love our wives.  We love our families.  We would all fight to the death to protect every single one of them.  Love is universal.  And it’s not just the love between a man and wife.

We got home tonight after being gone for less than 4 days total.  We pulled in the driveway, got out of the pickup and were met with the nicker of our horses and excited dogs at our feet.  I don’t speak horse or dog.  But I know they love me.  And they know I love them.

God’s love for us can’t be put into words.  And it doesn’t need to be.  God inspired some men to write things down for us, some of which talks about his love for us, but it’s not even a drop of water compared to the ocean of love that God has for us.  If you’ve ever experienced that love, you know what I’m talkin’ about.  If you haven’t, it ain’t too late…and I highly recommend it.  God loves you just as much as he loves the most famous preacher on the face of the planet.  But he can’t show ya if you won’t give him a chance.  There are some people in this world who don’t feel loved by anyone or anything.  One of’em might be you.  If that’s true, know this:  GOD LOVES YOU.  He loves you more than you can imagine…and He’s just waiting for you to give Him the chance to show ya.

By the way, I love my cousin so much I let him talk me into wearing a rented tuxedo-combination-suit type of thing for the wedding.  He thought it was funny when he asked me, “How do you like wearin’ that suit?”  I told him it wasn’t for me and that was fine….but I really didn’t understand how anyone could spend over an hour each day just putting on a suit for work.  He thought it was funny, but I was serious.  Apparently, it doesn’t take everyone else over an hour to hang and attach all the stuff that comes with a suit goes onto their body….but it dang sure did me.

We love because He first loved us.  1 John 4:19

  • Thanks for the words, Jake! God’s love is pretty amazing, we don’t deserve it…but he still gives it!
