The Rock Ain’t Got Nothin’ on Me – Guest Post by Jake Hershey

This is not

I have two confessions to make.  The first one is that as a kid, I used to love watching wrestling on T.V.  Back then, you didn’t have to have cable or satellite to watch Hulk Hogan do an atomic leg drop on the Iron Sheik or body slam Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka.  All you had to do was get up on Saturday morning and there it was, the WWF (now the WWE), in all of its glory on regular T.V.

This was all good and well, until they came up with WrestleMania.  WrestleMania was on pay per view and to get pay per view, you had to have cable and the only people I knew with cable were Grandpa and Grandma, so we went to their house and ordered WrestleMania, all so I could see my heroes beat each other up with their signature moves, which they all had.  Hulk Hogan had the atomic leg drop, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka jumped off the top rope, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat did some kind of kick type thing…you get the idea.

But that isn’t my confession…my confession is that while I was in college, I had a good friend who still loved wrestling and I started paying attention to it again.  By this time, The Rock was the big superstar…his signature move was the People’s Elbow…and I loved to watch him do it.

My other confession is that I used to be what some folks refer to as…a bit of a….hot head.  I used to get pretty mad pretty quick and it’d take me a while to calm down.  Thankfully, God has taken a lot of that from me, but it still comes to the surface more than I’d like.

For example, I was roping at a cowboy church practice awhile back.  I was heading and after roping my steer, I let my dally go and dropped my rope, allowing the steer to drag it to the stripping chute where I would take it off before letting the steer into the pen and alleyway.  I rode up to the stripping chute just in time to see some “chute help” with the best of intentions let the steer into the pen…with my brand new rope still around the horns.

For those of you that don’t know, a pen where multiple steers hang out tends to get pretty nasty pretty quick, so this was a problem.  I don’t remember what else was happening that day, but watchin’ that steer walk around dragging my brand new rope through the sludge that’s in the bottom of a steer pen set me off.  The guy was apologetic and offered to help, but I knew he wouldn’t be much help and besides, I needed an outlet for my anger.  At that moment, my mind flashed back to my childhood (and college) heroes of the WWE, layin’ the smack down on their opponents.

I bailed off my horse, jumped into the pen, grabbed the tail of my rope, worked my way up it all the way to the steer, grabbed the steer by the horns and performed my signature move-Steak On The Plate…..all this consisted of was bulldoggin’ the steer onto his side, which meant I ended up on my back, but was able to get the rope off and I felt better having taken my aggression out on the innocent animal.

As I stood up, I felt a warm sensation all along one side of my back and my entire arm….I realized that in my anger, I had executed the Steak on the Plate so that I landed smack dab in the middle of the biggest, wettest, greasiest, greenest, smelliest pile of chewed up and digested grass that I had ever seen.  You’d think I would have gotten mad all over again, but all I could do was laugh….serves me right for lettin’ anger get the best of me anyway.  Tell me God doesn’t have a sense of humor.  I wish my wife did…she’s still tryin’ to get that stain out.

James 1:19-21

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
