Three Things That Helped Me

by Kevin on February 9, 2012

The economy stinks.  Lately, I’ve seen all kinds of stories on T.V. about folks losing their jobs, homes, etc.  If you’re going through tough times financially, my heart goes out to you.

Until recently, things were purty tough around my house too…but God kept tellin’ me three things.  1)Be content with what I’ve given you 2)Lead a quiet life 3)Keep doing what I’ve created you to do

Things are lookin’ up around here (because we’re lookin’ up for everything).  If you’re goin’ thru tough times financially, maybe the three things God keeps tellin’ me will help ya out.

Be content with what I’ve given you

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5

Cowboys don’t need much, but sometimes we think we need more than we do.  I don’t know most of you readin’ this, but I’ll bet ya ain’t missed too many meals, ya got a roof over your head and a bed to sleep in and if you’re readin’ this, ya got the internet….so instead of feelin’ sorry for yourself, try thanking God for everything He’s blessed you with and remember-he’ll never leave you, he’ll never forsake you.

Lead a quiet life

11…. make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

Too many people today are worried about keepin’ up with the Jones’.  God’s word tells us flat out that the way to success is to keep our nose to the grindstone and our mouth shut.  The rest will take care of itself.

Keep doing what I’ve created you to do

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Mathew 28:19-20

Personally, I’ve never had a problem with being content and working hard.  There are times though that I lose focus on the third thing….making disciples, teaching folks what Jesus taught.  Every single one of us is called by God to do this.  It’s the last thing Jesus said before he went to heaven, so I figure it’s purty dang important.

I decided long ago that I would rather do what I enjoy for a living than get rich.  Equine dentistry, shoeing horses, riding colts, dayworking…those things ain’t gonna make a man rich and they ain’t gonna impress most people.   But I know it’s what God has created me to do….and he’s always provided.  Lately, the old pocketbook was just about empty and I couldn’t figure out why.  That’s when I realized that I hadn’t been spending much time on number three…making disciples.  God has called every single one of us to do this and it can be done in a million different ways.  I do it with my customers and thru Save the Cowboy, because those are the folks God has called me to reach.  You can do it wherever and whenever you feel God tellin’ ya to do it.  The Good Book has got a heck of a lot more to teach than these 3 simple things…but heck, these 3 are as good a place to start as any.

  • Like this alot, Jake! Thanks….what is it about those 10 little rules that are so hard to follow?

  • Jake

It ain’t natural to follow’em…..the bible says the flesh wants what it wants and the spirit wants what it wants. We gotta have guts enough to ignore the flesh and do what the Boss created us to do. The choice is ours…..and thank God we’ve got a choice. Just think, if it wasn’t for that dang woman who listened to that lyin’ snake in the garden……..anyway, thank God he chose to give us a choice and a chance to get right with him.

  • One thing I’d add is to remember that Jesus is our source. Sometimes I think I look to the left or to the right instead of up 😉
