Why wont my stairs build up in Dwarf Fortress? ›

You can build stairs in 2 ways: Digging it out from already existing stone or Constructing it. So if you are having the problem where you seemingly cant build a staircase, its because you are trying to dig out the staircase rather than trying to construct it.

Start at the bottom of the level you want to build upward from, click the "mine" > "Stairs" button. click the mouse on the spot you want the bottom of the stairs to start from, roll your mouse up to the next level and click again (in the same tile on this level that the bottom of the stairs is at) and your done.

You can only remove upward stairs unfortunately. If you mean a downward stairs and you don't want to see the hole, you have to just build a floor over it. You can "remove" downward stairs too, by removing the stair that's underneath it.

To create stairs, you'll need to place three blocks in the first column of the crafting table, two in the second column, and one in the third. You'll need to place your blocks starting on the bottom row of the crafting table.

It basically only gets hard if you settle on tough biomes like evil, savage or cold or with necromancers but even that can be easily managed once you know how to deal with it. Or if you are unlucky you could have some early random dragon or demon visitor or cave inhabitants you can't deal with in your embark.

With respect to the size of the rooms that players should connect to their hallways, 2x2 squares are perfectly suitable for bedrooms in Dwarf Fortress.

To build a Farm Plot, open Build (b) > Workshops (o) > Farming (f) > Farm Plot (p). Once it's built, you'll have to assign a crop to each season.

Stairs can be crafted from six wood planks, six cobblestone blocks, six bricks, six stone brick, six sandstone blocks, six nether brick, six quartz block, or six purpur blocks, producing four stairs per craft.

Pointing at a block top or the bottom half of a block side places the stairs right side up. Pointing at a block bottom or the top half of a block side places the stairs upside-down.

If most of the dwarfs are not allowed to go outside, then they won't be able to collect the wood. The few dwarfs who are allowed to go outside (the woodcutters themselves) will eventually get around to it, but probably not until they run out of trees they've been told to murder.

This error occurs if a dwarf tries to fill a pond and the pond zone isn't over open space. To fix it, channel underneath the pond zone, or delete the pond zone and make another over open space. Needs butcherable unrotten nearby item.
