Funeral services for William J. Sabel, who died Thursday were held at 10:30 a.m. today at Zacherl Funeral Home and 11 a.m. at St Peters Church, St Peter. Rev. Joseph Bittle officiated. Representing the St. Joseph's Society as honorary pallbearers were Erwin Sabel, Gregor Sabel Howard Sabel and Ralph Sabel. George Scheid
George W. Scheid, 81, Campbellsport, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Georgiana Keey, in Milwaukee, Sunday afternoon of old age after an illness of two months. Mr. Scheid, a town of Auburn native, Fond du Lac county, was born on March 3, 1865. He married Anna Koenig Dec. 30, 1890. She died in 1952. Surviving are children, Mrs. Georgiana Keey, Mrs. Susie Borchert, Mrs. Joanna Wandsnider, Clarence and Earl; brothers, Frank and William; fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist church, Campbellsport. Burial was in the Union cemetery. The Twohig funeral home had charge of arrangements. Harriet G. Scheid
Dr. Harriet G. Scheid, 47, of Lakewood, Colo., former resident of Rosendale died Tuesday afternoon in Colorado following a brief illness. Born March 18, 1919, in Rosendale, she was the daughter of Dr. Milo M. and Harriet Sizer Scheid. Dr. Scheid was a graduate of Rosendale High School, Ripon College (cum laude) in 1941 and the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine, Madison, where she was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha sorority. Dr. Scheid practiced in Taos, N.M., in 1947 and moved to Denver, Colo., in 1949. She was head of the department of anesthesiology at the Denver General Hospital at the time of her death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, city, the Order of Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include her parents, residing in Rosendale; one sister, Mrs. Alfred Grimm of Green Lake and one brother, Myron Scheid, Ripon. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Candlish Chapel. The body will be moved at 10:30 a.m. Friday to the United Church of Christ, Rosendale, and lie in state from 11 a.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service, Rev. John Bartos officiating. Milo M. Scheid
ROSENDALE – A doctor formerly on the staff of St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac and Mercy Hospital, Oshkosh, Dr. Milo M. Scheid, 84, died Sunday at Ripon Municipal Hospital after a year’s illness. Born Aug. 25, 1885 in Pierce County, he married the former Harriet M. Sizer June 3, 1909 in the Town of Lamartine. The couple resided in Rosendale since August of 1909. Dr. Scheid was a member of the First Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 111, OES Chapter 58, and of three medical associations, AMA, Wisconsin Medical Association and Fond du Lac County Medical Association. He was a former president of the latter. Dr. Scheid graduated from the University of Chicago and Rush Medical College and interred in Oshkosh. He was also ? officer during both world wars. Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Alfred Grimm, Green Lake, one son, Myron F. Scheid, Ripon, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, Dr. Harriet Scheid preceded him in death. The Revs. Donald W. Olson and Owen W. Steward will officiate at the 2 p.m. services Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Rosendale. ROSENDALE -Funeral services for William Scheid, 87, of Oak Lawn Manor Nursing Home, Oshkosh, were held last week at First Baptist Church, Campbellsport, the Rev. Henry Miller officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery. Mr. Scheid died July 22 at Oak Lawn Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness. Funeral services for Mrs. Frank (May) Schmidt, 69, of rural Oakfield, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun She died Thursday, Jan. 25, 1979, in an explosion at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hackbarth, Route 1, Waupun. The Rev Martin Koehler will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Mound Cemetery, Waupun. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p m. Sunday at the funeral Home. She was born Nov 2, 1909, in the Town of Trenton, the daughter of the late George and Mary McGrath Sloper In 1940, she was married to Frank C. Schmidt. The couple farmed in the Town of Oakfield until his death in 1968. Mrs. Schmidt is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Garrit (Belle) Smit of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Tenuis (Grace) Smit of Brandon and Mrs. Frank (June) Hackbarth of rural Waupun. Funeral services were held Monday at the First Reformed Church, Waupun, for Helen (Mrs. James) Searvogel, 41, 307 Brandon St., Waupun. The Rev. Irven Jungling officiated. Burial was in the Alto Cemetery, Alto. Searvogel died May 2 at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. She was born December 4, 1943 in Markesan, the daughter of Delmar and Elizabeth Aalsma Hopp. She graduated from Waupun High School in 1961, and was married to James Searvogel December 2, 1961 at Emmanuel Reformed Church, Waupun. She lived all her married life in Waupun, where she was a homemaker and computer operator at Grand River Co-op in Markesan. She was a member of First Reformed Church and the Waupun Lioness Club. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Kurt and Kevin, both of Waupun; two grandchildren; her stepmother, Mrs. Lola Hopp of Waupun; a brother, Franklin Hopp of Waupun; and a stepsister, Mrs. Harold (Mary) Hartgerink of Waupun. Joshua was a former member of Wyldewood Baptist Church. He is survived by his parents Kevin and Beverly Searvogel; four sisters Mandi, Ashley, Breanna and Aimee Searvogel, ail of Sheridan, AR; grandparents Harry and Irene Christensen of Omro, James and Beverly Searvogel of Sheridan, AR; aunts and uncles Jeff Christensen, Harry Jr. (Lori) Christensen, Michelle (Leo) Schmude and Renee Christensen. OSHKOSH, Wis. -Kevin D. Searvogel, 33, of Oshkosh, Wis., died unexpectedly at church camp in Chetek, Wis., where he and his wife were counselors for the week. A funeral service was held Tuesday Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. at Wyldewood Baptist Church, Rev. Randall King officiating. Burial followed in Alto Cemetery. He was born Dec. 21, 1964, in Waupun, the son of James and Helen Searvogel. On Nov. 5, 1983, Kevin Married Beverly Christensen in Waupun. He owned Update Construction Company, and was a member of Wyldewood Baptist Church, where he was active in youth ministry programs. Survivors include his wife, Beverly, of Oshkosh, Wis. four daughters, Mandi, Ashley, Breanna and Aimee, and a son, Caleb, all at home; a brother, Kurt (Trish) Searvogel of Sheridan, Ark.; father and step-mother James and Beverly Searvogel of Sheridan, Ark.; mother-in-law and father-in-law Ireane and Harry Christensen of Omro, Wis.; sisters-in-law Michelle (Leo) Schmude and Renne Christensen; and brothers-in-law Jeff Christensen and Harry Jr. (Lori) Christensen. Mrs. Celeste A. Secor, 70, of Bloomington, Ill., died Wednesday night at the Minnuitte Hospital there. She was born Oct. 26, 1894, and was married to George Secor, Nov. 7, 1904, in St. Louis. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Bloomington. A former member of St. Peter's Church, St. Peter, she had resided at Minawa Beach before moving to Bloomington in 1962. Survivors include one step-son, Carroll, Chicago; three step-daughters, Mrs. Fred Stratton, Mrs. Leslie Andrews, and Mrs. Dorothy Brockhouse, Bloomington; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962, parents, a brother and two sisters. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the Uecker-Witt Fuleral Home. Elijah Shephard, father of Joseph Shephard Esq., Superintendent of the United States Express Company, died a few days ago at Fond du Lac, Wis., aged 94 years. Mr. Shepard was born in Connecticut March 28, 1789, and removed to New York State in 1829, and for the last thirty years had resided in Wisconsin. He never was sick a day in all his long life until a short time before his death. He was man of much intelligence and sterling integrity.

George Sloper
Death came to George Sloper at his home west of the city on the county line at an early hour Dec. 28. He had been ill for some time with leakage of the heart, but none had considered his condition as immediately serious. Death came to him while he was seated in a chair. He was born near Chilton Mar. 1, 1860, but the greater part of his life has been spent in this vicinity. He was married to Mary McGraw about twenty years ago and she with four daughters, Belle, Grace, May and June, survive him. Funeral services were held from the home Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev Frank Nikel. Interment was in Forest Mound. Mrs. George Sloper Will Be Buried at Services on Thursday Mrs. George Sloper, a longtime resident of the area, died Dec. 10 at Waupun Memorial hospital. Born in the town of Alto, Mrs. Sloper was a resident of the town of Trenton when she died. Funeral services will be held from Meyers Funeral home at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Rev. Henry A. Lentz, vicar of the Trinity Episcopal church, will conduct the service. Burial will be in Forest Mound cemetery. The body will be in state at Beyers tonight (Wednesday), and until the time of the service. Mary McGrath was born July 12, 1877 in the town of Alto, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick McGrath. She married George Sloper in 1901. Mr. Sloper died Dec. 28, 1921. Survivors include four daughters — Mrs. Frank Hackbarth, Waupun, Mrs. Gerrit Smit, Eldorado, Mrs. Teunis Smit, Brandon, and Mrs. Frank Schmidt, Oakfield; a sister, Mrs. Johanna Madigan, of Beaver Dam; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Ontario, Canada, May 18, 1904, he was the son of John and Anna Rapson Smith. He was a retired maintenance man. He married Esther Selchert May 21, 1966. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow; one brother, William Smith of Detroit; one sister, Mrs, Albert Pirtie, Union Lake, Mich.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Elmer Lunow, Green Lake, and Mrs. Frank Lieske of Markesan; three stepsons, Russell and Robert Selchert, both of Juneau, and Edgar Schiller, Hustisford; and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Green Lake, Pastor D. E. Hallemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Mrs. Schmidt was born May 10, 1898, in the Town of Forest, the daughter of Henry and Agnes Seibel Mueller. On Sept. 22, 1922, she was married to John H. Schmidt. She lived in the Town of Forest all of her life until moving to this city in 1954, where she was a member of the Division Street Methodist Church and of the Lois Circle. Survivors include seven sons, John E. of Brownsville, Robert H., Chester H., Lyle C, all of this city, Elmer R. of Westchester, Pa., Leland G. of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Staff Sgt. Franklin L. Mrs. Belle Smit, 86, of 170 Everett St., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1989, at St. Agnes Hospital. She was born Sept. 8, 1903, in Waupun, a daughter of George and Mary McGrath Slopes. On Feb. 28, 1930, she married Gerrit Smit in Juneau. Mrs. Smit and her husband farmed in the Waupun area until 1967 when they moved to Fond du Lac. She was employed with Rolling Meadows Nursing Home for many years. Survivors include three sons, Roy and his wife Mary of Fond du Lac, Glen of Rosendale, and Gene and his wife Alice of Albuquerque, N.M.; four daughters, Lorene Jahns and her husband Raymond of Brandon, Hazel Smit of San Diego, Calif., Carol Jepson and her husband David of Oshkosh, and Linda Karls and her husband Jerry of Fond du Lac; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Hackbarth of Waupun. Preceding her in death were her husband in 1973, one son and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun. The Rev. Mrs. Grace S. Smit, 81, of Route 1, Brandon, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1986, at Waupun Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Smit was born Nov. 3, 1904, a daughter to George and May McGrath Sloper in Waupun. On Aug. 14, 1929, she was married to Teunis Smit in Beaver Dam. The couple farmed in the Waupun and Brandon areas until 1967, when they retired and moved to her present Brandon address. Survivors include three sons, Ted and Wayne D., both of Brandon, and Clyde of Waupun; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Gladys) Krueger of Fox Lake and Norma Smit of Waupun; two sisters, Belle Smit of Fond du Lac and June Hackbarth of Waupun; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, one grandson and one sister. Private funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kohls F'uneral Home, Waupun. The Rev. Roy G. Smit
Roy G. Smit, 65, of 350 Fourth St, passed away on Saturday Oct, 28, 2000, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Roy was born on Nov. 2, 1934, In Green Lake County, the son of Gerrit and Belle Sloper Smit. On May 18, 1968, he married Mary Geiger at Church of Peace In Fond du Lac. Roy graduated from Rosendale High School In 1953. He served In the National Guard in Ripon, He was very active in and enjoyed sports, both as a player and as a coach. He especially enjoyed baseball, basketball and bowling. More recently, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Roy worked on Chicago & Northwestern and Union Pacific Railroads for over 42 years before his retirement in 1977. Ray was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Byron and served on the council for 18 years. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Fond du Lac; three sons, Royal (Michelle), Steven (Sheri) and Randall (fiancée Danielle Glister), all of Fond du Lac: three grandchildren, Anthony, Jennifer and Hunter Smit; brothers and sisters, Lorene (Raymond) Jahns of Brandon, Hazel Smith of San Diego, Calif., Glen Smlt of Eldorado, Gene (Alice) Smit of Albuquerque, NM, Carol (David) Jepsou of Oshkosh and Linda (Jerry) Karls of Fond du Lac; father-and mother-in-law, Harry and Mary Lou Geiger; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Bob (Marianne) Geiger of Fond du Lac, Dave (Linda) Geiger of Fond du Lac, Chuck (Ann) Geiger of Eden and Sandy (Roy) Surita of San Antonio, Texas; many nieces and nephews. Services: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Church of Peace. The Revs. Gerald Bertsch and Richard Welkel will officiate. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery. Visitation: Friends may call at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and also at the church on Tuesday from noon until the time of service. Teunis Smit
Teunis Smit, 77, of Route 1, Brandon, in the Town of Springvale, died Wednesday evening at St. Agnes Hospital. Born on Feb. 14, 1898 in The Netherlands, he was the son of (the late William and Anna Van Zuren Smit. He came to this country in February 1916 and settled in the Waupun area. On Aug. 14, 1929, he married Grace Sloper at Beaver Dam, and the couple farmed in the Waupun and Brandon areas. Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin Krueger of Route 1, Fox Lake, and Miss Norma Smit of Waupun; three sons, Ted and Wayne both of Brandon and Clyde of Rosendale; 14 grandchildren; and a brother, William of Brandon. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Private funeral services for the immediate family will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kohls Co. Funeral Home, Waupun. The Rev. George Woldseth will officiate, and burial will follow in Wedges Prairie Cemetery at Ladoga. Visitation for Mr. Smit will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Gerrit Smith
Gerrit Smith, 81, of 170 Everett St., a farmer in the Fair Water, Rosendale and Beaver Dam areas until May 1967, died Sunday morning at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1892, in The Netherlands and came to the United States as a young man. On Feb. 28, 1930, he married Belle Sloper at Juneau. They moved to Fond du Lac in 1967. Surviving are his widow; three sons, Roy of Fond du Lac, Glen of Rosendale and Capt. Gene of Dover, Del.; four daughters, Mrs. Raymond Jahns of Brandon, Miss Hazel Smit of San Diego, Calif.. Miss Linda Smit of Fond du Lac and Mrs. David Japson of Oshkosh; and numerous grandchildren. A son, Randy, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun, with the Rev. Eugene Baisden officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Mound Cemetery at Waupun. Horace B. Smith
Horace B. Smith, 65, of 455 Scott St., Green Lake, died Sunday at Ripon Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born at Chopieau. Ontario, Canada, May 18, 1904, he was the son of John and Anna Rapson Smith. He was a retired maintenance man. He married Esther Selchert May 21, 1966. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow; one brother, William Smith of Detroit; one sister, Mrs, Albert Pirtie, Union Lake, Mich.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Elmer Lunow, Green Lake, and Mrs. Frank Lieske of Markesan; three stepsons, Russell and Robert Selchert, both of Juneau, and Edgar Schiller, Hustisford; and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Green Lake, Pastor D. E. Hallemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Dartford Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon. Funeral arrangements were made by Lewis D. Egbert, Green Lake. Wm. Starr
1879 - Hon. Wm. Starr died at Ripon, April 18th, in his fifty-ninth year. Born in Middletown, Conn., March 3d, 1821, he came to Wisconsin in 1843; followed teaching for three years, and then engaged in merchandizing, farming, and lumbering. He served prominently in the legislature in 1863 and 1864, and from 1865 until his death was a member of the normal school board, and its president from 1868. Ripon College owes much to his aid and good service. William Stewart
1879 - William Stewart died at the Home of the Friendless, Fond du Lac, Feb. 26th, in his ninetieth year. He belonged to a distinguished Scotch family, and served fourteen years in the British army. He was an officer under Wellington, at Waterloo, where he was wounded. He subsequently served eight years in the army of this country. He was among the earliest mail-carriers between Fort Dearborn, now Chicago, and Milwaukee.
